Beginnings
We met and married while students at Houghton College in western New York in 1966. Cathy grew up in Lebonan County in south central PA and Dave grew up near Rochester, NY. Cathy came to Christ as a 7 year old and Dave at 4. Cathy’s dad died when she was 14 and her Mom passed away when she was 17.
As a college student in the 60’s Dave was active in the student missions movement on Christian college campuses across the country. On our first date conversation included references to the call both of us had to missions: Cathy to Latin America and Dave to Asia. As the relationship developed the call was a factor that drew us together and the location of the call proved to be negotiable.
Cathy completed her BA in Nursing at the University of Rochester in ‘66 and Dave completed his BA in philosopy and Bible in ‘67. In the Fall of ‘67 we joined Operation Mobilization and after two months of training in Europe set out with 32 others from 12 nations overland to India in five old rebuildt delivery trucks. On a one month adventure we began in Brussels and drove through Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan into India.
